New Generation of Scrap Shears from Metso Lindemann - Trailblazers in
Scrap Shears Yet Again
(Web Magazine 2002)
The Dusseldorf recycling technology specialist looks forward to strong
demand for the new Lindemann EC scrap shears.
Metso Lindemann obviously knows the needs of the market. During the recent
past, this Dusseldorf-based company - part Metso Minerals, a member of
Metso Corporation - has notched up noteworthy successes in the worldwide
shredder and press market with its Power Zerdirators and RAS scrap baling
presses. The company Metso Lindemann is now confident that its latest innovation
in scrap shears will prove yet another market hit.
"We know that our customers around the world are increasingly looking
for products that will enhance their competitive position. Consequently, our
aim was to develop a series of scrap shears whose efficiency - in terms of
flexibility, energy consumption, operating reliability and ease of maintenance
- would surpass that of existing shears," explains August van der Beek,
head of Metso Lindemann’s Recycling Equipment Division.
And the result is impressive indeed. It prompted Metso Lindemann to give
the new generation of shears the indicative name of -Cut
(pronounced Eta-Cut) - incorporating the Greek letter (eta),
the technical symbol for efficiency.

The key innovative features of the Lindemann EC series, which enable operators
to process scrap more flexibly and profitably, comprise
- An optimized drive and control system, which reduces cycle times by
a further up to 15% with no increase in driving capacity, although all
effective compression forces have been increased;
- Different operating programs for processing the widest possible range
of scrap types efficiently. In fact, the shears can automatically identify
the most effective mode of operation for a particular material;
- An integrated infinitely variable positioning system for precisely
controlling and monitoring piston strokes, speed and acceleration. Unlike
the proximity and limit switches conventionally used, this system is
insensitive to dirt and falling scrap;
- Possibility of steering precisely towards the optimum hydraulic switch
positions to increase the cutting rate and avoid hydraulic shocks;
- Assured capacity for compacting bulky shredder feedstock into logs
by virtue of the increased pressure forces;
- WearCon automatic wear monitoring system, which automatically
signals in good time the impending need for a change of wear plates;
- Hydraulic blade tensioning device, which guarantees monitoring of the
correct setting and tension of the blades and automatic readjustment,
if necessary;
- Computer-controlled central lubrication of all guides;
- Comprehensive wear protection, plus even simpler exchange of wear parts
with no need to remove entire functional units;
- Reduced filling height, permitting a better view and faster loading;
- Integrated feeding hopper, which, even during the cutting process,
can take in sufficient quantities of material for the next operating
cycle, and thus ncreases effective production time;
- Integrated mobile scrap chute, which ensures trouble-free output removal
with less noise;
- Modular design of the press beds, which forms the basis for a no-delay
supply of wear plates;
- Dynamic oil level control, which detects even the slightest losses
of oil and provides increased protection for the hydraulic assemblies
and the environment;
- Visualization of process data, with a clear-text user interface and
data display, also on decentralized computers;
- Remote diagnosis via Teleservice, facilitating quick, economical support.
Proven features of Lindemann’s previous LU series have been retained, e.g. the
breaker-bar, supporting table, mechanical synchronism of the side press, and
extremely high overstroke of side press and lid.
Consistent enhancement of customer benefit is demonstrated yet again by the new
generation of Lindemann EC scrap shears. No other series of scrap shears worldwide
can boast a comparable wealth of advanced technical features and innovations.
Accordingly, van der Beek takes a highly optimistic view of the prospects for
Metso Lindemann’s business in scrap shears.
